This tool collects objective Iridium satellite visibility data from your modem.
What This Tool Measures
Service Uptime: Actual measured connectivity - the most reliable metric. Directly answers "can I communicate?"
Satellite Observations: Position reports from all satellites the modem can hear, shown on the sky plot.
Coverage Grid: Observation counts by sky direction. Shows where satellites can be received.
RSSI Distribution: Signal strength readings over time (site-level, not position-correlated).
Survey Duration
Run for 48-72 hours minimum. Shorter surveys may miss intermittent issues or not capture all satellite passes.
Data Honesty
RSSI cannot be attributed to specific sky positions. The modem reports RSSI for its current lock, while simultaneously reporting ALL visible satellites. This tool does not present false RSSI-position correlations.
Advanced Mode: Horizon Classification
Each compass direction is classified by comparing its 8-14° observation count to the best direction:
- Clear (≥70%): Full visibility, no significant obstruction
- Partial (40-70%): Some reduction, possible minor obstruction
- Sparse (<40%): Significant blocking (trees, buildings, mesh)
- Blocked: Missing observations in critical elevation bands
Advanced Mode: Verdict Criteria
Requires 48+ hours of data:
- EXCELLENT: 95%+ uptime, 7+ clear directions, no blocked/sparse
- GOOD: 90%+ uptime, 5+ clear directions, no blocked
- ADEQUATE: 80%+ uptime, ≤1 blocked direction
- MARGINAL: 60-80% uptime or significant obstructions
- POOR: <60% uptime or severe obstructions
